Founded in 2016, Sunrise Community for Recovery and Wellness (Sunrise) is recognized by SAMHSA & NC Department of Health and Human Services as a regional Recovery Community Organization (RCO) for the central to west region, spanning from Charlotte to Cherokee. Sunrise is led and governed by those in the recovery community and their allies. Our staff of Certified Peer Support Specialists use their lived experience with substance use and mental health challenges to be a force of good in the community and help others discover and maintain their pathway to recovery.  Our mission is to empower individuals to meet their full potential through peer support, resource connection and innovative programming.

Sunrise is 100% staffed by Certified Peer Support Specialists. To become a member of Sunrise’s team of Certified Peer Support Specialists, you will either need to already have your Peer Support Certification, or be willing to complete your certification within 90 days.   

To become a Certified Peer Support Specialist: 

  • You will need to have been in recovery for at least one year. For the Peer Support Certification course application, you will need to provide two reference letters affirming this period of recovery.
  • Complete 40 hours of training from a Certified Peer Support Course. Click HERE to find approved trainings in North Carolina. 
  • Complete an additional 20 hours of trainings. Sunrise’s Peer University Program can provide these additional hours. Click HERE to learn more about our Peer University Program.
  • There is no mandatory order in which to complete your required hours of training to become a Certified Peer Support Specialist. You can complete the 40-hour training before or after the 20-hour training. 

Cherokee Re-entry Program Coordinator and Outreach​

Sunrise Community for Recovery and Wellness is partnering with EBCI to expand our Re-entry program into Cherokee. We are looking to add two more NC Certified Peer Support Specialists to our team. For these positions we’re looking for Certified Peer Support Specialists that are passionate about re-entry, have personal lived experience with justice involvement and prefer an enrolled member of the EBCI and/or multiple years of experience working as a peer support specialist. In this role you will be providing individual peer support to those released from EBCI jail by connecting participants to resources based on each individual’s needs. Peers on the Move Certified Peer Support Specialist

The Certified Peer Support Specialist (PSS) provides peer support and resource navigation to engaging participants. This person uses their personal lived experiences to connect with participants. As someone who has successfully managed their own recovery, the PSS provides an example to program participants of what they can strive for in their own wellness. The purpose of this role is to connect with participants in areas where connections to peer support, resource navigation or harm reduction services are less accessible.

Strategic Community Opioid Response/MAT Jail Peer

The Strategic Community Opioid Response/MAT Jail Certified Peer Support Specialist works collaboratively with the Buncombe County Health and Human Services to provide supportive services to individuals returning to the community from Buncombe County Detention Facility.  This individual works with these individuals post-release by supporting their sustained recovery and health needs through provision of system navigation and engagement support.

Sunrise Community is looking to fill a few PRN “as needed” positions to cover shifts for our housing programs in the Asheville area. Nights, weekends, holidays and/or 3rd shift availability is a plus.

We are currently looking to fill the third-shift PRN position at our Blair H. Clark Respite House. Your shift will be third-shift up to 36 hours a week at $21 an hour. Application details below.
