September is National Recovery Month, an annual nationwide event now in its 31st year!
Each September, communities across the country come together to host recovery rallies and other awareness-raising campaigns to celebrate the potential for people struggling with mental health and substance use challenges to recover and to acknowledge the vital role that behavioral health providers, families, and communities play in supporting recovery.
This year, National Recovery Month is being supported by Faces and Voices of Recovery, an organization “dedicated to organizing and mobilizing the over 23 million Americans in recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs, our families, friends and allies into recovery community organizations and networks, to promote the right and resources to recover through advocacy, education and demonstrating the power and proof of long-term recovery.”
COVID-19 has limited the ways that people can celebrate and gather together, and has created stresses and hardships for many families and communities. Sunrise Community for Recovery and Wellness, WNC’s peer-led regional Recovery Community Organization, believes that this year it is more important than ever to spread the world that people can and do recover from mental health and substance use challenges and to share potentially life-saving information about services and resources that are available to support people who may be struggling.
In celebration of National Recovery Month, Sunrise Community for Recovery and Wellness is going to be offering weekly online recovery workshops and will be hosting Recovery Community Listening Sessions for Buncombe, Madison, McDowell, and Polk counties.
